We got talent: South Bend Regional Chamber unveils Forty under 40 class of 2023 (2024)

Jeff Rea| President and CEO, South Bend Regional Chamber

It’s such a rewarding feeling to hear our Michiana Forty under 40 recipients express their delight and gratitude for being recognized. For the Chamber, it’s our honor to bring to light the amazing talent that exists in our region.

Seventeen years strong, Michiana Forty under 40 recognizes and celebrates the professional achievements and community engagement of 40 young adults under the age of 40 in Michiana. Including this year’s class, the program has honored 680 individuals throughout St. Joseph, Elkhart, Marshall, Starke and LaPorte counties in Indiana, as well as Berrien and Cass counties in Michigan.

The recipients are some of the brightest and most compassionate individuals in the region. Beyond their accomplishments at work, the honorees are recognized for their contributions to the community and their selfless desire to give back. With talent still being a focal point in driving economic development, a program like Michiana 40 Under 40 is another asset that differentiates our region from others. Highlighting the amazing gifts of our young people is another integral part ofthe quality of place environment that exists in the region.

The process to get selected as an honoree is as follows. Any young adult, professional, executive or leader under the age of 40 (by a specified date) can be nominated for Michiana Forty under 40, but first he/she needs to be nominated. The online nomination process began in late January and concluded in mid-March. After nominations close, an eight-person selection committee composed of business leaders throughout the region reviewed and scored all nominations to arrive at the class. This year saw 190 nominations received.

I have absolutely no influence over the selection committee. No Chamber employees are on the selection committee. It is a process that works, year after year. Nominees are scored on a number of factors from professional accomplishments, charitable/civic engagement, awards/certifications, age and more. View the full list of criteria on the michiana40.com site.

This year showcases a diverse class of honorees, from their educational attainment and backgrounds to the type of work they do and their journeys to get there. You’ll see small business owners, entrepreneurs, managers, builders, marketers, attorneys, realtors, educators, financial advisors, doctors, customer relations representatives and more included. This year also marks the first time we are aware that an individual with Down’s syndrome has been recognized. For all the honorees, their accomplishments are truly inspiring.

In May, honorees took part in a fun photo/video shoot at South Bend’s Howard Park, where they were able to share in the celebration and joy with family members, nominators, employers, colleagues and friends. In addition to this special publication, the Chamber created a recognition video showcasing the class and their personalities that can be viewed at michiana40.com. On Aug. 30, we continue the celebration with a Michiana 40 Under 40 alumni bash at Four Winds Casino South Bend, so ALL classes can connect.

It is important to perpetuate the talent that exists in the Michiana region. The Chamber is proud to present this program each year and looks forward to continuing this for many years to come with great partners like the Community Foundation of Elkhart County, First State Bank, Mendoza College of Business at Notre Dame, Gibson, and the South Bend Tribune.

Employer: Myself: MaxJack, Inc. (doing business as Dairy Queen)

Job title: CEO/President/Owner/Operator

Who or what inspires you? People who seem to have it figured all out inspire me, as many days I feel like between four kids and running a business, I feel like I clearly don't have it all figured out! My dad, Jim Betz, has always been a big inspiration in my life. He put in the work and did what he needed to do to make himself and his business successful. He was involved in the community, made many meaningful business relationships throughout his career and was a respected local business owner for years. He is still a mentor for me to this day and is one of my biggest supporters when I need that extra encouragement or advice. One of my main goals in my business is to continue to grow this business just as he did throughout the years and, of course, make him proud. Another huge influence and inspiration to me has always been my sister, Tracy Betz-Sandifur. She is extremely successful, driven, opinionated and one of my favorite people to be around. She taught and encouraged me to be a strong, independent woman from a young age and made sure I was aware that I belong and deserve a seat at any table I choose to sit at in life. She has cheered me on through all stages of life and has always applauded my feisty, assertive and determined approach to life.

Best advice you’ve ever received? Two short, simple and to-the-point sentiments is what I refer to daily: "You can only control what you can control" and "Pick your battles." For someone who always wants to be in control of every aspect in life, owning a business can really humble you in regards to thinking you're in control. I had to learn and still continue to learn daily that there will be many things in life, whether it be personal or business, in which I can only control so much and the rest is out of my hands: focus on what you CAN control and let the rest be; it will all fall into place. Worrying about things you simply cannot control is pointless and takes time and energy you could be devoting to the things you can control in life. I feel like "picking your battles" is also applicable in work and life: I pick the top few things we need to focus on daily at work so that we can really hone in on solving those problems as well as not overwhelm everyone with a million little things all at once. I also use this strategy at home with my kids in an attempt to survive with teenagers and toddlers!

What is something people don’t know about you? I have run 11 half marathons, my last one being one I had no intention of completing nor trained for, but was talked into it and got it done.

What problem are you trying to solve? I'm trying to solve the problem of women feeling intimidated, undervalued and as though they have to shrink themselves in the workplace. I am one of the youngest as well as one of the only females in my position within my industry, which can be extremely intimidating at professional events, conferences and local meetings. I have battled for years with proving myself as a respected young woman CEO in an extremely older male-dominated industry, in which I have taken great pride in making my voice heard, my restaurant stand out for excellence and achievement and to serve as a vibrant, motivational mentor for young entrepreneurs (especially women and girls) in our community. It is my mission to show aspiring female entrepreneurs that you can completely shatter that glass ceiling you think is above you by working hard and fighting to make your presence known, respected and heard.

Who or what inspires you? My dad inspires me every day. Not only does his surgical excellence and depth of ophthalmic knowledge and experience inspire me professionally but his generosity, kindness and servant’s heart inspire me on a personal level. I’m proud and honored to carry on his Boling Vision Center legacy just as he carried on his father’s, my grandfather’s, legacy before him.Best advice you’ve ever received? Do what you love then you’ll love what you do!What is something people don’t know about you? I have two tattoos and I love Marvel movies! What problem are you trying to solve? I dedicate my time, talent, and passion to solving the spectrum of vision conditions my patients bring to me daily. Whether it’s getting rid of a thick pair of glasses or contacts with refractive procedures, clearing the blur and restoring the colors through cataract surgery, or maximizing the remaining vision in a patient with only one good eye – my goal is to treat everyone like family and strive to protect, preserve, and enhance the precious gift of sight with integrity, compassion, and excellence each and every day!

Who or what inspires you? I’ve been fortunate to be surrounded by so many amazing people that motivate me to be the best version of myself. Specifically, my family and friends who have endured very difficult times, yet continue to display kindness despite their unbearable circ*mstances, inspire me to bring my best energy into every room.

Best advice you’ve ever received? There is no such thing as “work-life balance.” Instead, we should be chasing harmony. “Work-life balance” is an elusive concept because it implies a strict separation between our personal and professional lives. The reality is life is a continuous journey where various aspects interconnect and influence one another. Rather than seeking an ideal balance, embracing the idea of harmonizing allows us to acknowledge that each part contributes to our overall well-being and fulfillment. What is something people don’t know about you? I have an irrational fear of more things than I care to admit. What problem are you trying to solve? I have been working the past two years to create a safe and inclusive space for women of all walks of life to connect and to stand with one another, both personally and professionally.I believe we need more support systems inside of companies specific to women, and I am desperate to help find the solutions.

Who or what inspires you? Our community's resilience.Best advice you’ve ever received? "Poder es poder." In English, that translates to, being able to do something is power or power is the ability to do something. My external evaluator during my capstone at Holy Cross College said that to me. I have never forgotten that phase and it has shaped so much of what I do today. It's also a constant reminder of how capable we all are as people by the simple fact that we are able to take action, speak up, invest our time to learn, and more. The ability to do those things is empowering. Poder es poder.

Who or what inspires you? People with a seat at the table who advocate for others…and those who persevere through challenges and circ*mstances to make their way to the table! And of course, my beautiful family.

Best advice you’ve ever received? Love your neighbor as you love yourself.

What is something people don’t know about you? I survived a stroke during my undergrad years at Notre Dame and the experience shifted my perspective in many ways. Previously, I had found value in being a self-starter and working hard in pursuit of achievements, but soon after this experience I was determined to work hard each day in pursuit of a greater purpose. I grew up in a very rough neighborhood on the southside of Chicago so I had a cautious and somewhat pessimistic outlook on life. I decided to teach myself about growth mindset, learning to reframe my thoughts and eventually rewire my brain. I am a work in progress but I wake up each day ready to learn and serve others in ways that bring me true joy and purpose.

What problem are you trying to solve? Making education and workforce readiness resources accessible for every child in our community, regardless of their upbringing. Children are the future and every single one deserves encouragement, safety, and hope for a bright future.

Job Title: 1st Source Asset Advisors Program Manager

Who or what inspires you? The women of my family greatly inspire me. My mom, my grandma, and my great-grandma were all college-educated, working mothers. Going back to my great-grandma’s generation, that’s quite impressive. My grandma and my mom both have higher education degrees, so I was raised in a family that clearly values women’s rights to make their own paths. Growing up, though, equality and women’s rights were never talked about; it was just the natural way of things. Women went to college; women chose the jobs and the lives they wanted. It wasn’t until I was much older that I realized how lucky I was to be raised by women – and men – who saw that as a simple way of life rather than a revolution. That’s what I want to instill in my daughter – that she lives in a world where she can take for granted that she’s a fifth generation of college-educated, independent women.

What is something people don’t know about you? Working in finance was pure accident! I have an undergraduate degree in English and creative writing, going to college with the sole purpose of learning how to write the next Great American Novel. To escape a job that was not the right fit, I went into banking and found I loved it. That was more than 15 years ago! I haven’t given up on my original dream though. I’m currently working with a literary agent to find a publishing company for my debut novel – a historical fiction story based in Prague during World War II.

What problem are you trying to solve? I know some people look at their job without passion, thinking “I’m not saving the dolphins here.” I want everyone on my team to see how the work they do, down to the smallest, administrative task, is saving the dolphins. When people believe in the power of the work they do, they come to work with a contagious attitude – contagious to the clients they serve and the teammates working alongside them. Those are the people who make a difference in people’s lives. As a leader, I want to guide them to see that they are savings the dolphins, they are making a difference, they are helping people reach their long-term goals.

Who or what inspires you? People. I know this is the time where everyone is for themselves and the world is not bonding together, but that inspires me to want to do more and to change the narrative.Best advice you’ve ever received? To never be the smartest person in the room, because that means you are in the wrong room and you are always capable of learning. What is something people don’t know about you? I’m a cry baby. I cry over the same romantic comedies that I have seen a million times. I cry when my kids make me happy, I cry when I listen to music. I am probably crying telling you this. I am a huge cry baby. What problem are you trying to solve? Racial injustice. We still have so much more to do and I want to be a part of that change that will help my children and e generations to come to feel equality.

Who or what inspires you? Other women in the CPA profession that have shown me a healthy model of being both career- and family-focused.

Best advice you’ve ever received? Make a plan – work a plan. I love a good list and think it is important to be intentional with your time. I also think the first part of the advice – making a plan – or in other words, setting a vision/goal is just as important.

What is something people don’t know about you? I love good, interesting food but hate cooking. Okay, to be honest this is not a secret. Most people in my life know this about me because I invite myself over for dinner!

What problem are you trying to solve? Problem-solving for my clients who are going through mergers and acquisitions transactions (M&A) is fun. I can be creative, brainstorm alternative models, and then test my different solutions. It is rewarding to walk clients through different M&A solutions/models and determine what are the main priorities for each specific client.

Employer: WNDU-TVJob title: Investigative Reporter

Who or what inspires you? I’m inspired by people who overcome the obstacles that are thrown at them and use those obstacles as a chance to learn and grow as a person. A great example of this is my mom, Carla, who always bounces back from any issue better and brighter and finds a way back onto the path toward success when many others would give up. Another person who excels at this is my partner, Mike, whose passion, dedication, moral compass, work ethic, and selflessness never cease to amaze me. Lastly, the character Elle Woods from “Legally Blonde” is a big inspiration — she shows how you can stay true to who you are despite major changes in your life plans — and how every roadblock is an opportunity to become an even better version of yourself.

Best advice you’ve ever received? Choose your battles wisely, don’t let your inner saboteur hold you back, and never take yourself too seriously.

What is something people don’t know about you? I love to sing and dance. I also have a lot of pop culture knowledge, so I would be helpful at trivia nights.

What problem are you trying to solve? There are a number of problems that people in Michiana face that I believe my work can help to address. Education/College: Doctor of Pharmacy, California Northstate University; M.B.A., Indiana University, South Bend; B.S. Biological Sciences, University of California, Irvine

Employer: Saint Joseph Health System (Trinity Health)

Job title: Operations Supervisor, Pharmacy Services

Who or what inspires you? My inspiration comes from my family’s story of generations of survival and perseverance against all odds – especially that of my grandparents’, Ashot and Taguhi. Their willpower to rebuild their/our lives after surviving a genocide and still manage to give to others is inspiration to overcome any modern-day obstacle.

Best advice you’ve ever received? – In life, always say “Why not?” – unless you’re speaking to your pharmacist.

What is something people don’t know about you? Having lived half of my life overseas and studying in multiple countries has really opened my eyes to the beauty and needs of our global communities. I spent months living in a 13th century Italian monastery/university studying medical bioethics with people from around the world. Aside from all the cool experiences, we ended up forming a decent world music band.

What problem are you trying to solve? If I were to pick my battles, reducing disparities in health and healthcare is the direst need within our community. Healthcare starts with individual and community factors. On an individual level, we must strive for higher quality food consumption, healthy lifestyle choices and engage in activities that fulfill our mental health/wellbeing (such as rest and good friendships). On the community level, we must eliminate food deserts (including increasing the quality of foods at public schools), increase preventative care, and access to education and resources for every corner of our county. Not one community should receive less than another.

I am also inspired by the work that the SBMF does to ensure that the community has an adequate blood supply.Best advice you’ve ever received? The best advice I have received from many people I respect is “don’t worry about the small stuff.” This is not always easy to do. Another piece of advice I love is to have a little fun every single day. What is something people don’t know about you? I love to dance! I have danced all my life beginning with early roles with the Nutcracker Ballet. I have focused on ballroom dancing over the past six years. What problem are you trying to solve? The ways in which I can help those in need in this community. I have always been involved in big events that raise funds and draw attention to our friends who are homeless, people with disabilities, and so many other important needs.

My three young children inspire me through their optimistic world-view, their unpredictable questions that are at times deeply profound, and their courage to constantly learn and do new things.Best advice you’ve ever received? To not take anyone’s advice. While it’s certainly helpful to listen to advice and critically consider it, we should ultimately be unafraid to come to our own conclusions. What is something people don’t know about you? Although I don’t own a motorcycle, I do have my motorcycle license. A few years ago, I took the ABATE rider safety course and was planning to buy a bike from Goshen, Indiana’s Janus Motorcycles. However, as my wife and I were also expecting our third child at the time, the need for something that would accommodate three car seats rose to the top of our priority list and that motorcycle magically turned into a gray minivan. What problem are you trying to solve? I teach the Marketing department’s introductory class to undergraduates and MBA students. Since all students in the Mendoza College of Business are required to take the class, many enter wondering why they, as a future investment banker or management consultant, need to take an entire course about marketing. Thus, in my teaching, I try to solve the problem of discipline-based myopia by demonstrating how all areas of business (from accounting to finance to marketing to operations) are interconnected and complementary. Even though your job title may officially connect you to only one of these areas, you’ll be better at what you do if you understand and appreciate the other fields on which your entire organization’s success depends.

Who or what inspires you?I am inspired daily by my amazing colleagues and students who are a constant reminder of the importance and impact of education. My husband is a lieutenant for the Saint Joseph County Police Department, and seeing the passion, care, and leadership he implements with his shift and within our community is an inspiration to me as well.

Best advice you’ve ever received?Listen with the intent to understand. The power of truly listening lies in the ability to hear the unspoken, understand the unsaid, and connect with the hearts and minds of those we serve. It's a great reminder as a leader to be present, to listen first, and to seek input from those who will be affected by your decisions.

What is something people don’t know about you?I am naturally an introvert and need time after school to recharge. I could spend a terrifying amount of time alone watching Netflix or reading.

My family is my inspiration, and my continuous source of strength for me to achieve anything in life. They always support and encourage me to leave my comfort zone and have taught me to handle everysituation with grace, patience, and commitment.Best advice you’ve ever received? "Look at situations from all angles, and you will become more open.” I’ve heard this quote in a number of different forms and from many different people, and it has become a sort of mantra in my life. In my line of work, I fully believe seeing things from other peoples' perspectives is key to a happier life and more peaceful community. Each of us has our own path through life with unique struggles, so changing our vantage point helps us recognize, reflect on, and respect one another’s opinions that may be different from our own. What is something people don’t know about you? In 2021, my husband and I decided we needed more to do in our busy lives and purchased a vacant farmhouse built in 1919. We sweetly refer to her as our "30 year project" and are loving the process of restoring her to her former glory. What problem are you trying to solve? Professionally, I am an advocate for helping people and changing lives through Community Action. Alongside my colleagues, I work to lift low-income residents in my community out of poverty by offering a "hand up" rather than a handout. I believe Community Action's work will improve my community and make America a better place to live.

Kate Steury

Age: 31Birthplace: GoshenResidence: GoshenEducation/College: Eastern Mennonite University; Hesston CollegeEmployer: Shirley’s Gourmet Popcorn Company of GoshenJob title: CEO/OwnerWho or what inspires you? The “who” would be my inner circle of family and friends. The “what” would be visiting new places, trying new foods, listening to great music and learning new skills.Best advice you’ve ever received? “Not all storms come to disrupt your life, some come to clear your path.” I believe that storms in all regards are inevitable, but the response and reaction we have to life’s waves are what mold a unique and fulfilling life. You can let the rain ruin your day, or pull up your rain boots and jump in some puddles. What is something people don’t know about you? People assume that I’m extroverted due to my high energy and love for involvement, but I’m actually equally as extroverted as I am introverted. I love being in my store or in a boardroom filled with people laughing, learning and engaging but I definitely need to balance that time with reading, walking, or paddleboarding alone on the lake to recharge. What problem are you trying to solve? Satisfying someone’s popcorn craving! Just kidding… mostly. Ha! When I opened Shirley’s in 2018, my goal was to add a place of value to Downtown Goshen where all ages would feel welcome to come inside and enjoy my favorite snack. I’ve now realized that it is so much more than making and eating popcorn that makes me love my career. I hope to be an encourager to anyone I meet and to add laughter to a conversation. I love getting to know the people that come inside and to learn about their life. I love speaking to classrooms about business and mindset. I love helping corporations create their custom Shirley’s flavor to gift to their clients while celebrating a milestone or holiday. I’m never sure what new problem I’ll be helping a customer solve or I’ll be facing myself, but I try and take each day as it comes while ebulliently serving Christ in the ways he calls me to within my little pocket of the world.

Ashley Rene Swathwood

Age: 38Birthplace: ElkhartResidence: OsceolaEducation/College: Concord High School; Attended IUSB 2003-2005Employer: Ashley Rene's Prom & PageantJob title: OwnerWho or what inspires you? My family inspires me,especially my children. With my father beinga successful business owner, business has always been something I loved and was very interested in.But being a woman in businessis unique; both incredibly rewarding and challenging to juggle it all. I want my children to see that you can run a successful business, lead your company, and still be a great Mom and wife.I remind myself often that they are always watching everything I do, both personally and professionally, and that always inspires me to work harder!Best advice you’ve ever received? The best advice I've ever been given in business is don't hold yourself back. Oftentimes, it can be easy to listen to the opinions of others or even that voice in your own head telling you that you can't do something. However, if you put your mind to it and work hard, you can achieve things you never thought possible.Use the doubts, even your own, as motivation to prove them wrong. What is something people don’t know about you? Most people don't know that I originally went to school majoring in elementary special education.I've always had a heart for serving others, especially those with disabilitiesor in difficult situations. As a business, I'm able to combine my passions and provide dresses for organizations such as Night to Shine and Miss Amazing for special needs adults and children. We also often donate dressesto girls in need through an Indiana non-profit called The Gifted Gown. Being a part of these special events makes my job extra special! What problem are you trying to solve? My goal with Ashley Rene's was to create an upbeat, fun, and positive environment for both employees and customers.I wanted Prom girls to be able to come in and experience dress shopping and have that one-on-one customer service that is provided in the bridal industry, but where they can still have fun.In today's culture, teen girls are already feeling so much pressure and the idea of dress shopping can be completelyoverwhelming for some clients. We hope to take some of that stress and pressure off by carrying a wide selection of styles in sizes 000-26 and work with them to find something they look, and most importantly feel amazing in.

What is something people don’t know about you? Coaching baseball and softball not onlyfor my kids but also teaching the game to others is the most rewarding things I've ever done.

What problem are you trying to solve? Being activelyinvolvedin the HBA and the workforce development, I would love to put a dent in the diminishinglabor shortage in our trade.

Maci Tetrick

Age: 26Birthplace: Plainfield, Ind.Residence: South BendEducation/College: Bachelor of Science, Atmospheric Science, Purdue UniversityEmployer: ABC57 NewsJob title: Morning MeteorologistWho or what inspires you? My mom is my hero. She pours her heart out for kids (my siblings, me, and the students in her classroom) to make sure every opportunity for success is available to them. I’ve seen her go out of her way countless times to help neighbors, even if she didn’t personally know them. She just knows how to make the community a better place. I aspire to have her same civic-mindedness and kindness. I know she gets that from my Gram, her mom, who quietly helped animals and people in need without seeking any thanks or recognition.Best advice you’ve ever received? “The worst they can do is say no.” There’s no reason to be afraid to ask for what you want! What is something people don’t know about you? I do my own hair and makeup for television, and I pick out all my own clothes. I get dressed sometime before 2 a.m., and it always feels so cold that early, which is why most of my dresses are long sleeved. I wear warm tights too, even in the middle of summer. You usually can’t see these on camera if I’m standing in the correct position. I’m proud that most of my clothes are bought secondhand, which is better for the planet than buying brand new items. Hair and makeup happen later, usually just before 4 a.m.What problem are you trying to solve? I just love this planet, and I wish we gave it more credit for giving us all we need: food, water, sunshine. We are at a critical time right now to keep Earth healthy. I want this planet to be our home for generations to follow. The question I always come back to is, ‘how can we expect Americans to live sustainably, if they are never taught how to do so in school?’ Here’s where I try to help. I love visiting Michiana classrooms to teach students how they can live a more green life and love this planet, too.

Shaban Varajab

Age: 37Birthplace: Kakamega, Western Province, KenyaResidence: South BendEducation/College: M.A International Peace Studies, University of Notre Dame; B.A Education (Math and Economics), Moi University, Kenya

Employer: South Bend Community School CorporationJob title: GEAR UP South Bend! (GUSB!) Data and Accounting ManagerWho or what inspires you? I am inspired by President Obama's story. His life journey; coming from nothing to a powerful leader in the world, inspires me. I can relate with every single piece of his humble beginning. I know the pain of growing up in underserved communities and how education transformed my life to where I am today. He inspires me to diligently serve professionally and contribute back to the community to address the injustices that hold us back.Best advice you’ve ever received? I was raised by my late maternal grandmother after losing my dad (1997) and mom (1998). She told me that our decisions and actions will determine how our future will become. Focus, humility, patience and integrity is all you need to succeed anywhere on earth. What is something people don’t know about you? I struggle writing the word "mom" in small letters. Many times, I find myself capitalizing it because I do it as a sign of respect to motherhood. I never saw my dad because my MOM and dad divorced when I was very young. She struggled as a single MOM to provide for me before she died and left me in the hands of my grandmother. Looking at where I am today, I believe any mother out there qualifies for a capitalized MOM.What problem are you trying to solve? I want to solve the youth violence problem in our community. Growing up in rural Kenya, I experienced firsthand how difficult it was to pursue education and break out of the poverty circle. Lack of opportunities is a pipeline to youth violence. We have many youths out here who go through the same struggle as I did, and because of that, they are vulnerable to political manipulation and violence.I survived being a "statistic" because people believed in me and connected me with youth empowerment programs like Yes Youth Can in Kenya. As a result, I founded 42 Change Makers (www.42changemakers.org) to help youth (drawn from the 42 tribes of Kenya) to engage in entrepreneurial endeavors that would build their futures and bring economic, social and political stability in their community. I am excited to introduce the same model here in Michiana soon. This came after conducting a feasibility study in 2016 when I was a fellow with enFocus.

Andrew Weiss

Age: 33Birthplace: Bloomsburg, Pa.Residence: South BendEducation/College: B.A., Holy Cross College

Employer: Knights of Columbus

Job Title: Financial AdvisorWho or what inspires you? Blessed Fr. Michael McGivney and his mission to serve Catholic Families through Charity, Unity, and Fraternity. He founded the Fraternal Order of the Knights of Columbus in 1882 to defend and support the widow, the orphan, and poor immigrant families who were discriminated against because of their religion and country of origin. His mission lives on today, over 140 years later, through the good works of the Knights of Columbus worldwide including through supporting women and children fleeing the conflict in Ukraine, natural disaster relief, and support of the Special Olympics. I hope to build something worthy of such longevity and recognition.Best advice you’ve ever received? When I was a boy, my late grandfather, “Pop” taught me a valuable lesson in humility. He gave me a $20 bill at a family gathering (a frequent occurrence for us grandchildren), and I responded by saying, “Oh, no thank you Pop, you keep that.” Thinking I was being polite and mature. He said, “Son, when a man offers you something, you accept it. He wouldn’t offer it if he didn’t want you to have it, and it’s disrespectful to deny someone a good deed.” I learned to be more grateful and humble in receiving gifts. Accepting gifts from people can be difficult because it means they are helping you and, in that moment, you have to allow someone to give of themselves to you when you may not be able to give anything in return – and that’s okay! Being able to graciously accept gifts without “keeping score” is as much a good act as giving a gift without expecting anything in return. What is something people don’t know about you? Some people are surprised to learn that I can do a backflip. Others find it interesting that my mother was a Lobsterman when I was a kid, growing up on the coast of Maine. What problem are you trying to solve? Every day, I work to help people and businesses solve their financial problems and achieve their financial goals. On the wider scale, my mission is to sanctify the global economy through the financial services business by helping more people find solutions to their financial problems with morally and ethically designed and executed insurance and investment strategies. I believe we can change the global economy for the good if we are all more intentional about how and where we spend and invest our money.

Danielle Campbell Weiss

Age: 34Birthplace: South Bend

Residence: South BendEducation/College: J.D., Valparaiso Law School; B.S., Indiana Institute of TechnologyEmployer: City of South BendJob title: Assistant City AttorneyWho or what inspires you? My children. Thinking about their future in this community certainly helps inspire my daily work and the ways I choose to volunteer my time, but simply observing their approach to the world has also been a source of great inspiration.Kids are optimistic and energetic about almost everything. They see things as they are, without the complexities and biases that can cloud our judgment as adults. They are not afraid to ask questions or speak their minds. They live in the present, forgive quickly, and love unconditionally. I think all of those qualities are pretty inspiring!Best advice you’ve ever received? At the beginning of my legal career, I was given the advice that a lawyer can zealously advocate for their clients while still being courteous and civil to the other side – somewhat similar to the idea that “you catch more flies with honey than vinegar,” which I also have always found to be great advice. What is something people don’t know about you?People might be surprised to learn I am pretty talented at making crafts or other DIY projects, including (where feasible) my kids’ Halloween costumes. Some of my favorites I’ve made include an old man costume for a baby, Thomas the Tank Engine, a Presidential baby (just before the 2020 election), a Minion, and a green M&M.What problem are you trying to solve? Professionally, my daily work is essentially problem solving ways to help our city. Most days, my problem solving is geared towards helping reduce risk to the city, enhancing the workplace and supporting employees, and spurring investment to create a stronger South Bend.Personally, I am trying to perfect the art of maintaining a solid work-life balance and tackling the little problems at home, the latest of which is figuring out how my husband and I can keep up with the never-ending piles of laundry in our home with four kids under the age of 5 (tips welcome).

Victoria "Vickie" Woodard

Age: 39Birthplace: Cleveland, OhioResidence: South BendEducation/College: B.S., Actuarial Science, Ohio University; M.S., Mathematics, Ohio University; M.S., Statistics, North Carolina State University; Ph.D, Mathematics and Statistics Education, North Carolina State University; M.S., Computer Science (expected Dec. 2023), Indiana University at South Bend

Employer: University of Notre DameJob title: Assistant Teaching ProfessorWho or what inspires you? My mother, Lynn Weber, is probably my greatest role model. She was a stay at home mom until I went to kindergarten. After that, she went back to school part-time to get her bachelor’s degree and eventually got a job as an accountant (she even passed all four parts of the CPA exam in one try!).She always told me that I had to go to college before I could get married.Little did she know I’d take that advice to heart and it would take 34 years and four degrees before I would get married! She is a strong, smart, empathetic, hardworking, Christian woman, and I know I wouldn’t be who I am today if it weren’t for her.

Best advice you’ve ever received? The first time I ever ran a half marathon, my friend Sam, a marathoner, told me that I shouldn’t look at what the people around me were doing.“This is your race, Vickie.Don’t let other people dictate how it goes.”I’ve found that advice helpful not only in running, but in many other aspects of my life.

What is something people don’t know about you? In grad school, I taught myself how to play the drums so that I could be part of a statistics cover band.

What problem are you trying to solve? Big picture, I try to figure out the best way to use and implement technology in the classroom to help students learn. Students love tech and if you aren’t using it, then you don’t have their attention. But if you don’t use it right, then it won’t be conducive to learning.Right now, the specific problem I am trying to work on is how to use ChatGPT and other AI agents to aid student learning.People were afraid of what the calculator would do to students' mathematics abilities when it was first used in classrooms. The same fears are there now for ChatGPT. But if educators can learn to use those tools to their advantage, we may be able to better prepare our students to work in a society where AI is everywhere.

Amanda N. Zaluckyj

Age: 36Birthplace: St. JosephResidence: South BendEducation/College: B.A., History, Grand Valley State University; Juris Doctor, Michigan State University College of LawEmployer: Athora Law GroupJob title: PartnerWho or what inspires you? As an attorney, my clients often call me when there’s a problem; it isn’t always their best moment. My goal is to get them the best possible outcome for whatever problem or challenge they’re facing. I’m always inspired by that look of relief when they realize that everything is going to be okay.

Best advice you’ve ever received? Someone shared this quote with me: “It’s not who you are that holds you back, it’s who you think you’re not.” It was an important moment for me, because I realized that the only things holding me back were my own fears and insecurities.

What is something people don’t know about you? Most people don’t realize that I’m a gamer. I’ve played everything from Mario Kart to Oblivion to Rise of Kingdoms.

What problem are you trying to solve? I’m trying to figure out how to make the law more user friendly, specifically by ditching all the legalese. Clients deserve to understand the contracts they sign, the estate plans they execute, and the pleadings we file with the court on their behalf.

Justus Zimmerman

Age: 39Birthplace: Berkeley, Calif.Residence: South BendEducation/College: B.A., English Language & Literature, Gordon College, Wenham, Mass.Employer: South Bend Symphony OrchestraJob title: Executive DirectorWho or what inspires you? The collage of creatives in this region and the support networks that sustain them. From my first interview with the Symphony’s Board, who work behind the scenes every day to make our world-class symphony possible, to the multitude of performers, painters, builders, and experimenters, I’m continually inspired by our region’s energy and determination and creative impulse. The arts and culture scene here is far more vibrant and deep than anyone from outside would expect, and it’s because of passionate individuals putting in the work that benefits us all.Best advice you’ve ever received? Don’t start a sentence with ‘I’. While it was intended as specific copywriting advice, it’s even more powerful as a philosophy. It’s not about me — it’s about the people we’re serving. It’s a powerful redirector of focus that not only serves to clarify where our energy should be going (our stakeholders), but as a bonus, psychology has shown that serving others makes you happier, too! Win-win.What is something people don’t know about you? My first “gig” out of college was as a bear ranger in Yosemite National Park. Armed with only park-issue shorts, a mag-lite, and a paintball gun, I was responsible for “hazing” the bears out of the climbers campground each night and educating the tourists on proper food storage. The poor bears were just trying to score some free food. Sometimes it felt like the tourists were the ones needing hazing. What problem are you trying to solve? So much of the public discourse is about our divisions. And while differences and disagreements can be productive, they are most so when they start from a place of empathy. The Symphony’s music transcends our labels, and you can find yourself in the hall sitting next to someone who thinks differently but is equally transported by the music and the experience. Republican or Democrat, being there for Beethoven 9 or Yo-Yo Ma is reminder that we’re all human, that we’re all in this together, and together we can create beauty.
